Community Service
Doing the Community Service honour is a great way to experience the joy and satisfaction of serving others in a disciplined way.You’ll search the scriptures to see want God says about looking after those who are doing-it-tough. You’ll study the insights of the renowned author Mrs White on the good Samaritan.You gain an understanding of what ADRA stands for and how it operates.Best of all, you’ll be involved with planning and carrying out your own Community Service project. StormCo people have you heard of this honour?

Candle Making
Learn about the different types of candles – free-form candles, layered coloured candles, mould candles, ice candles, dribble-wax candles, perfumed candles and beeswax candles.You will learn about the different candle waxes. You’ll know the secrets of which type of wick to use and how to use the best wick-size to make your candles burn brightly.Best of all, you’ll have fun making your own candles!
Currency 1
Find out what people used to purchase goods and services before money evolved into the currency that we use today.Discover how many unusual items have been used as currency and then evolved to become commodity money and later evolved further to become symbolic money.Learn fascinating things about your country’s currency; things such as its history and where it is made. Be surprised to learn who actually owns the currency in use every day.Learn how collectors grade coins. Best of all, if you haven’t already done so, start your own collection. Happy collecting!
Digital Photography
Digital photography has certainly revolutionised the art of photography.This honour has a number of technical topics which explain how digital cameras work; image sensors, pixels, image resolution, image size, image compression, image formats, etc.You’ll understand the basic techniques of taking outstanding photos and use techniques such as steadiness, framing, light direction, angle and exposure to name some.You’ll use this knowledge to take pictures, edit them and select some to make a Power Point presentation. What wonderful memories – all created by yourself!
Folk Art 1
Folk Art is a modern term for the old traditional, Cottage Art. Its origins were hundreds of years ago. Generally folks had no formal artistic training. They decorated simple articles; often using materials that were readily available.In this honour, you will learn about Folk Art and the techniques of creating beautiful works of art – surface preparation, tracing designs, base coating, brush strokes and more.You’ll see how Folk Art can be used to illustrate life lessons found in the Scriptures.Best of all, you’ll create at least two objects of Folk Art – a gift for a loved one, perhaps!
Glass Painting
Glass painting! First, you’ll learn about being safe when glass painting.Then there’s information about mixing primary colours – what colour when mixed with what colour makes what colour. You’ll know about what paints and materials to use.It will be heaps of fun to paint a picture on a drinking glass, paint a silhouette picture, paint a glass candle holder, paint an abstract design on a light bulb and create a hand-painted picture by using reverse painting technique on a glass picture frame. Whew!!Can anyone see an opportunity to create personalised birthday or Christmas presents?
Leather Craft 1
The objective of this honour is to give participants an introduction to Leather Craft.You’ll learn about basic tools used in leather craft and how to use them safely.You will know about different types of leather, what leathers are suitable for tooling, how to dye leather and how to finish leather.Tooling. That’s the hands-on part. You’ll enjoy making a craft out of leather.
Metal Craft
This is a hands-on honour in which you will learn about the materials that can be used to create a metal craft; for instance copper, aluminium or gold (if you’re rich enough!!).This honour is intended to give an introduction to metal craft and only simple hand tools (ie hammers, tin snips, punches, hacksaws, pliers, files, battery powered drills, twist drills and pop riveting tools) are needed. Welding and metal machining equipment is not required.Let your creativity loose as the following metal craft projects take shape: one using metal foil tooling, one using a metal punch, and another using drilling, riveting and bending of metal.
Scrapbooking 1
Scrapbooking is a great way to record the events of one’s life. How? Please read on.In this honour you’ll be introduced to the art of scrapbooking. You will create your own scrapbook based on a theme that you have chosen.You’ll know what a journal is. You will learn about materials to use, scrapbook types, acid-free products, adhesives, types of paper and more. Of course, there’s skills you will gain; cropping, using scrapbooking ‘tools’ and setting out you scrapbook pages to make them look great. Enjoy!
Soap Craft
We all use soap, but do you know what is in it and how it is made? Who were the first people in history to discover how to make soap and learn about its benefits?Do the Soap Craft Honour and discover the answers to these questions. At the same time you will learn some easy and inexpensive fun crafts that you can do using an ordinary bar of soap.Did you ever think that you would be able to make your own soap? Well, you can. It’s not hard and it’s fun. You will be making your very own soap that you can give as gifts to family and friends or have fun using yourself.
String Art 1
This honour is an introduction to String Art. String Art is all about creating fascinating ‘masterpieces’ using basic tools and readily available materials – pins, nails, flat boards and string. By string we mean anything that does the job of string – cotton thread, fine wire etc.You’ll learn about the effects of different angles – right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle. Then there’s different stringing methods – filled circle, hollow circle, star, edging and filler to name just some.As this is a hands-on honour, there’s plenty of things to do to get you on the way to being a String Art artist and ready to try your hand at the advanced String Art 2 Honour.
HEALTH & SCIENCE
Bones, Muscles & Movement
This honour is all about you – your bones, muscles and joints. They are fascinating pieces of ‘machinery’ and, as the scriptures declare “wonderfully made”.You will gain a basic understanding of what our bones do, how they grow and how they (with medical assistance) repair themselves if they are broken. Then there are your muscles. Some work automatically (your heart and breathing for instance) while there are others that can be trained to do things such as talking, walking, catching a ball or threading a needle.You’ll know the names of your vital bones and muscles. You will make a simple model of one of your movable joint. As was said before, this honour is all about you!

Throughout the SPD we have a wide diversity of countries and local legal requirements. Local requirements are changing regularly.There is a world-wide trend for only accredited organisations or persons to train people in First Aid using government-approved courses. Often there are serious legal consequences if these requirements are not met.Everyone must check and comply with the legal requirements of their area / country. For example, in Australia, all First Aid Courses must comply with standards set out by the National Training Information Service (NTIS). Training can only be provided by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

This honour is a must for those interested in a career in any of the health fields and disciplines.You’ll look at health in the Spirit of Prophecy. You’ll be blessed as you reflect on the blessings bestowed by the Master Healer – Jesus. You’ll understand the Biblical approach to anointing people who are in ill-health today.This honour will give you insights into a wonderful and exciting field of service to others as you interview health professionals and examine medical and health facilities.
HOUSEHOLD ARTS
Cooking 1
The cooking honour is a favourite for hungry Pathfinders. You’ll learn about operating your stove at home safely and the basics of preparing food that is safe for people to eat.
You’ll know about cooking appliances and cooking utensils. Then there’s cooking methods such as boiling, broiling, frying, baking, simmering, waterless cooking and microwave cooking.
There’s plenty of opportunities to create your own culinary masterpieces – eggs, potatoes, cereals, drinks, vegetables, salads, vegetarian entrees (or a vegetable casserole). Of course, all of these are healthy! So, as they say . . . . . ‘start cooking!’
Housekeeping
To earn this honour, you’ll need to do the Laundering Honour first.This honour covers the essentials of ‘housekeeping’ – how to keep all the inside parts of a house clean and free of pests and other nasties. You’ll learn best way to keep stoves/cooktops, microwave ovens, and refrigerators clean. To name some more, there’s kitchen utensils, carpets, windows – and even fireplaces – that need to be kept spic and span.You’ll need to take on the housekeeping role for at least a week. If you’re a younger person, your mother will love this honour!
Laundering
This honour gives a broad introduction to the art of laundering.You’ll know about washing instructions, washing machines, clothes driers and irons. If you don’t own any of there now, it won’t hurt you to know about them. Then there’s the tricks-of-the trade; how prepare a wash, how to care for woollens, how to remove stubborn stains (ink, rust, blood, chewing gum and more).They’ll love you as you do the practical part – caring for the laundering requirements for at least a week!

Amphibians 1
What is an amphibian? You’ll learn about frogs, salamanders and newts. You will be wised-up on the use of those common terms ‘frog’ and ‘toad’. What do frogs do when it is cold or during dry times? How do amphibians protect themselves? How can such a small frog make such a big noise? Did you know that some amphibians may grow to over 1.5 metres long?Then, there’s that most important topic – protecting amphibians.You will know the answers to these questions as you earn the Amphibians 1 Honour. You’ll know about the life history of an amphibian. You have a choice of doing some fascinating hands-on stuff with amphibians. Listen carefully. What frog made that noise?
Birds 1
Birds. This honour is an introduction to those fantastic feathery friends!You’ll learn what makes birds different to other creatures and understand more about the creativity and love of our God. You will reflect on how birds impact on the lives of people, especially the people of your country or where you live.There’s plenty to practical things to do; identifying birds – some by sight and some by sound. There’s a choice of setting up a feeding station, observing an occupied bird’s nest or making a study of a bird habitat. Come to think of it, if you’re keen, you can do all three!
Cats
Learn about the magnificent cat family – tigers, pumas, jaguars, cheetahs, leopards, lynxes and, of course, the king of beasts. Then there’s your own pet pussy cat – and all the different breeds of cats. Have you ever wondered how cats can see in the dark, how their ears are protected or why they have whiskers. Cat’s paws (and their teeth!), you say, are used for wrecking things in your home – or is there more to it than this?There are famous stories of the cat family in history and more importantly in the Bible. It’s all in the Cats Honour.
Dogs
In this honour you’ll learn the scientific name for the dog family, you’ll marvel at the wild members of the dog family and become acquainted with some of the breeds of pedigree dogs. There’s small dogs, large dogs, fast dogs, pet dogs and working dogs!You’ll learn about toy dogs, rescue dogs and even dogs with blue tongues. Then there’s information on where dogs have been – and still are – helpful to people. You’ll even have the chance to write or tell a dog story.So, as we say to our beloved pooch – ‘go fetch’! Enjoy!
Ecology 1
This honour deals with the world in which we live and what we can do to make our natural environment a better place to live.You’ll learn about ecosystems, ecological pyramids and ecology terms such as ‘community’, ‘ecology’, ‘food chain’, ‘conservation’, ‘ecological succession’ and – wait for it – ‘eutrophication’!Then there’s the hand-on parts of constructing a diagram of a freshwater-pond ecosystem, observing an animal, monitoring big-city pollutants and helping improve our environment.Finally, you’ll reflect and discuss what the scriptures have to say on this subject.
Fishes 1
You’ll learn what defines a ‘fish’ and be able to identify the key body parts of a typical fish.There are about 32000 different species of fishes and you’ll get an understanding of fascinating groups such as Jawless fishes, Cartilaginous fishes and Bony fishes. Then there’s the biggest fish; (12.95 metres long) and the smallest fish (7.9 millimetres long). There’s creatures that are fishes (ie the Seahorse), but don’t look like fishes. There’s more!You’ll examine the Scriptures to reflect on what they say about fish stories.Then there’s the hands-on part – putting your new knowledge in action. Go for it!
Geology 1
Become more aware of this planet on which we live and its fascinating geological features.You’ll become familiar with terms such as delta, cirque, mesa, alluvial fan, syncline, anticline, billabong and sand spit.Then there are volcanoes, mountains, rivers and glaciers. Learn about rocks; granite, basalt, lava, sandstone, slate and limestone to name a few.Best of all, you’ll examine the significance of a geological feature in your local area — a great thing to do on a camp-out or an opportunity to study something you haven’t noticed before.
Grasses
Grasses. We eat them. We use them for tools and shelter. We play on them. We complain about them. Our way of life depends on grass products.You will be awed as you learn about something we take for granted – grasses. What is a ‘grass’? What roots and seeds do grasses have? Why can grass be eaten, mowed and cut and yet it still grows. Are there annual and perennial grasses?You’ll be surprised when you make your own grass collection of all the different grasses you never noticed before.
Insects 1
This honour is a fascinating introduction to insects.You’ll learn the distinguishing characters of a typical insect and wonder at the diversity of the insect world. You’ll understand how insects are classified into the various orders.There’s insect species such as wasps, bees, ants, cicadas, aphids, stick insects, cockroaches, termites, lice, beetles, fleas, mosquitoes, beetles and butterflies to name some.Then there’s the ‘good’ insects and the ‘bad’ insects. You’ll have a chance to find and identify at least 20 species yourself. As they say, “Get the bug!” Enjoy.
Mammals 1
What is a mammal? Believe it or not, you and I are mammals!In this honour, you’ll learn when God created mammals and what characteristics mammals have. Then there’s the different orders of mammals: Marsupialia, Chiroptera, Carnivora, Rodentia, Cetacea and more. Some mammals can fly and some spend their lives in water. There’s mammals which are useful to mankind and some that may cause problems.You’ll enjoy identifying mammals and checking out Bible stories in which mammals are involved.
Marine Invertebrates 1
Unlike sharks, fish and whales, most of the animals that live in the sea do not have a backbone and are called “invertebrates”. Many of them even look more like plants than animals and are attached permanently to the bottom.There are hundreds of different types of marine invertebrates for you to discover, capture your interest and amaze you.Spending a day at the beach exploring the rock pools left behind by the tide is a great way to discover these animals.
OUTDOOR INDUSTRIES
Agriculture
This honour gives an introduction to farming.There are important things to learn. For example – different soils and what grows well in them; how plants obtain and use nutrients; what plants and insects are pests and how to control them. Then there’s agricultural machinery – what the different types do. You’ll know how to read and use weather maps.Then there’s the best parts – the hands-on parts. You’ll have fun and satisfaction when checking out the germination rates of different seeds and being involved in growing crops from planting right through to harvesting.
Fruit Growing
You can even eat the ‘fruits’ of this honour. You’ll learning about grafting, hardiness, pruning and pollination. You’ll understand the site and soil conditions required to grow the best fruit trees.With you own hands, you’ll prune and care for fruit trees. You may even plant your own fruit trees.Best of all, you will compare the qualities of flavour, texture, and appearance of two different varieties of the same fruit. Yum!
RECREATION
Camp Oven (Dutch Oven)
The Camp Oven honour is one that will please all hungry Pathfinders. In this honour, you’ll learn about the fascinating history of the humble Camp Oven. In Australia, it’s called a ‘Camp Oven’; in North America – a ‘Dutch Oven’; in South Africa – a ‘Potjie’.In order to get the most out of a Camp Oven, you’ll understand the principles of operation of a Camp Oven, how to season a Camp Oven, what fuels to use, how heat is controlled and more.You will know about and adhere to safety issues while using a Camp Oven. Best of all you will use a Camp Oven to cook a soup/stew, a casserole, vegetables, bread and wait-for-it . . . a dessert. YUM!
Camping Skills 1
For over forty years, Israel wondered and camped in the desert. After they settled the promised land, they spend one week every year camping, just to remind them of God’s blessings.While camping, you can experience in depth, the wonders of God’s creations. From the beauty of flora and fauna to the buzzy pests that bother at night. You’ll learn keys to safe camping, from setting up campsites, preparing fires and caring for you, others and the environment while enjoying God’s amazing world.
Canoeing 1
Imagine cruising down a still river in a canoe. There’s a quiet ripple as your craft glides through a nature wonderland.This honour focuses on the skills needed to canoe safely over still water. You‘ll understand safety issues associated with canoeing, learn the importance of Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s), terms such as buoyancy and the parts of a typical canoe and paddle.There’s heaps of practical skills – paddling stokes, embarking in a canoe, what to do in a capsize situation, canoe rescue and more. A great honour to do, so ‘start paddling’!
Cycling 1
In this honour, you’ll learn about the parts of a bicycle and what they do. You will know about the importance of cycling courtesy and safety rules – such things as wearing a helmet. You’ll know about hydrating and commonly-used hand signals.You’ll be familiar with the skills needed to keep a bicycle in good working order. You’ll be able to set your saddle (ie seat) to the correct height, check tyres, brakes and other parts of a bike. You’ll even be able to fix a puncture.Then there’s the best parts: first up, planning and participating in a route of 20 kilometres and then the big one – the 80 kilometre cycle. So, on your bike and happy pedalling!
Drill & Marching 1
What is it that stirs our souls when we see a formation of soldiers or a brilliant marching band perform? How is it that they can move together as one?Drill and marching doesn’t only apply to soldiers. It will develop your coordination, improve your physical development and encourage your self-confidence.You’ll learn the difference between walking and marching plus the correct way to give orders when drilling and marching. Then there’s the secrets of moving together in a group or squad. You’ll learn and execute drill and marching terms. So have heaps of fun and . . . . .QUICK MARCH!
Drill & Marching 2
Having achieved Drill & Marching 1, you are looking forward to advancing your skills in this fun activity.This will lead you to inspire others by being able to perform more advanced drill and marching manoeuvres such as being part of, or commanding, a colour party to raise and lower the National Flag. Also, you will motivate young people, when marching, by being able to give commands on the correct foot as well as having the ability to always being in step with the music.You will be able to provide dignity to functions by being able to march in slow time.
Hiking 1
Imagine. Adam and Eve hiked in the Garden of Eden, but they didn’t earn an honour for it!When hiking, you see and experience many things you miss as you flash by in a car. The exercise and companionship are added bonuses.You’ll learn hiking essentials such as appropriate clothing, footwear and foot-care, food-to-take, water needs and more. You’ll take these into account as you plan your hikes.Then there’s the hikes themselves. Enjoy!
Kites
In this honour, you’ll learn interesting things and do fun things with kites.You’ll know the basic parts of a kite and the principles of what makes kites fly.You’ll be fascinated by the long history of kites and the roles they have played and are continuing to play.The best part of course is building and flying your own kites. This honour only requires only two but you can build more. So ….. It’s UP AND AWAY!
Knot Tying 1
This honour gets you started with knots that you’ll use for the rest of your life.You’ll learn about ropes and how to care for them. Terms such as bight, bend, standing part, running end, turn, loop and whipping will be familiar to you.You’ll know how to tie basic knots such as Granny knot, Square knot, Overhand knot, Clove hitch and Bowline. Then there’s common knots – Carrick bend, Figure Eight, Fisherman’s knot, Prussik knot, Sheepshank, Sheet bend, and Timber hitch to name some.Best of all, you’ll use your creativity to make a knot board to display your handiwork.
Map & Compass
This honour provides a solid understanding of topographical maps and the practical use of a magnetic compass. It is very useful for ‘cunning running’ honours such as Orienteering. The focus is on map & compass skills. It does not address electronic systems such as GPS.You will learn mapping topics such as contour intervals, grid systems, grid north, magnetic north, declination and more. You’ll learn the features of an ‘orienteering’ compass and how to use it in conjunction with a map and when off the beaten track.This is a comprehensive honour in which the theory and practical go hand in hand. This honour will open up a whole new world for you!
SPIRITUAL GROWTH, OUTREACH & HERITAGE
Alive Bible 1
You’ll experience the Bible as never before. The Bible – or the Scriptures, as some people call God’s Word – is where we find amazing direction from the God of the universe. He loves us and wants us to be in His kingdom; a ‘Forever Friend’ of Jesus, His Son who died for us.You’ll learn how to improve your memorising skills. You’ll use a fun way to ‘warm up’ your brain before learning, by heart, an adventure story from Scripture; either God Ruins the Bullies’ Evil Trick or The ‘Ghost’ on the Water. Of course, you’ll need to share what you’ve learned.It’s a great start to learning God’s Word, having it in your heart and becoming an ‘Alive Bible’ – God’s live, on-the-spot agent. His Word in your heart helps you to meet life’s challenges as you begin to grasp the secret of Jesus’ power. WOW!
Babysitting or Childcare
The focus of this honour is on how to care for a baby during a short absence of one or both parents. A ‘baby’ is defined as an infant whose age is roughly between 6 months and 2 years.Because of the many cultures and different legal requirements in the South Pacific Division, the notes are general in nature.Topics include caring for a baby, preparing the baby’s bottle, bathing a baby, making a baby’s bed, the advantages of breast feeding, weaning a baby and a baby’s fontanel.Then there’s the practical parts such as interviewing mothers and babysitting babies yourself; a wonderful opportunity to give frazzled parents a break . . . . Coo Coo!
Bible Marking
You’ll learn a number of ‘clever’ ways to find the treasures in God’s Word – the Bible.How? There’s a number of Bible Marking methods – Chain Reference, Colour Code, Cross Reference (or Marginal Reference) Number Reference, Highlighting-or-Underlining and Subject Lists.Learn the advantages these Bible Marking methods offer as you apply them to your Bible.You’ll discover how to come closer to God through Bible study and personal devotions and, of course, remaining in close contact with Him.
Christian Storytelling 1
Christian Storytelling is a wonderful God-given art which has inspired and encouraged people from the Garden of Eden right up to our present time. It will continue to do so.This is the first level of the Christian Story telling honours and you’ll learn the ‘tricks of the trade’; how to help with nervousness, for instance. Did you know that all great storytellers get, at very least, a bit nervous? Then there’s the essentials of storytelling, ‘tools’ to use, how to adapt stories and much more.You’ll have a chance to use and develop your skills. Take note as your skill as a Christian Storyteller – with God’s help – grows. It’s exciting stuff.
Christian Worship 1
This honour gives an introduction to Christian Worship. As Christians, we worship our God. So it makes sense that we examine His scriptures to help us understand who our God is and to find out about Christian worship. This honour is based on the Scriptures.First we look at the ‘big picture’ as events unfold over time. The aim is to help us get an appreciation of our wonderful, loving God. We look at the meaning of the word ‘worship’ and reflect on examples of worship through the scriptures. There are some useful tips.Finally there’s the personal, practical part – personal worship and how you can help enrich the worship experience for others. Don’t hold back!
Cultural Diversity
This is a fascinating honour as it provides the incentive to meet interesting people – people from other countries.You’ll learn the definition of terms such as stereotype, culture and cultural diversity. You’ll find out what the scriptures tell us about cultural diversity.You’ll compare notes on traditions, cultures, clothing, food, worship and other things. Who knows, you may make a new friend for life!
Language Study
For those Pathfinders who can speak more than one language fluently, this honour is a great one for you to do. We call a ‘foreign’ language one which is not native to you.You will translate both the written word and a short presentation of a foreign language. Using a foreign language, you’ll have a conversation and write a simple letter.You’ll translate our Pathfinder Pledge and Law into your foreign language.Finally, you’ll discuss those in your vicinity (or elsewhere in the world) who speak your foreign language and what opportunities you have to converse with them.
Puppetry 1
Here’s your chance to apply your creativity to the max.Learn about the different types of puppets — finger, hand, monster style and many more. You’ll know how to become a successful puppeteer as you learn and practice the ‘tricks of the trade’ — how to make a puppet ‘come alive’ and so on.You’ll make your own puppet and learn how to care for it and your other puppets.You’ll write your own scripts and perform your own puppet shows. It’s truly a great way to share the love of Jesus and His soon return!
Sanctuary
This is a fascinating honour. It introduces the core of Christianity – the Sanctuary.Imagine yourself, right there in the wilderness below Mount Sinai. With God’s leading, you’ve escaped slavery in Egypt and now He has instructed Moses to construct His sanctuary.You’ll examine the scriptures to get a grasp of things such as the Court, the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. Then there’s the Altar of Burnt Offering, the Laver, Table of Showbread, Altar of Incense, Lamp Stand and the Ark of the Covenant.It’s part of God’s grand plan for us – the coming Messiah and best-of-all His kingdom for us!
SDA History
There are many individuals who have contributed to the development of the Seventh-day Adventist movement beginning in North America in the 1800’s, and its spread throughout the world today. In this honour you will take a look at the Millerite Adventism, the formation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and its worldwide mission.You will be able to research how the message came to be shared in their own local area, including stories of key people and/or the formation of churches and/or schools. The aim of this honour will show that everyone has a part to play in this amazing miracle story of what God is doing today.
World Changers 1
This honour is all about being a World Changer; a Holy Spirit inspired one, taking the lead from God’s inspired communications to the world – the Bible.The honour is aligned with the World Changers Bible Project, 2019. It’s origin is in the countries of the South Pacific.Too often people scoff and condemn the Bible. The silly part is that many of these people have never looked inside a Bible, let alone taken the effort to adsorb what it is really about.This honour is all about how to call on Divine assistance through prayer and thoughtful, disciplined study. Then, the best part, gives practical advice on how to introduce friends to Jesus, the saviour of the world. Yep! This is being a real World Changer!
VOCATIONAL
Bookkeeping
This is an honour that everyone should have. It’s all about keeping track of your hard-earned money. Learn the basics outlined in this honour, develop these habits and you’ll reap the benefits for the rest of your life.You will know about household budgets (or farm budgets if you live on a farm). You’ll make your own budget and keep track of your own finances for at least 3 months.Then there’s other common financial topics such as writing and endorsing cheques, understanding monthly statements, calculating vehicle mileage and doing simple financial calculations. Understand the basics of electronic banking and credit cards. Go for it!
Electricity
In this honour you will gain a basic understanding of the wonders of electricity – electrical repulsion and attraction, direct current, alternating current, batteries, electric motors and electrical safety devices.You’ll know the first things to do in the event of a person suffering electric shock.You’ll examine two simplified circuits; the lights of a car and the electric power in a house. Have fun making things such as a simple cell battery and an electromagnet.Contact with high voltage electricity (ie above 32 Volts) is beyond the scope of the honour.
Signalling 1
This is a fascinating honour. The original has been updated and now includes new material to broaden one’s appreciation of this great topic. There’s a part on fascinating signalling facts.Nowadays International Morse Code and Semaphoring have been displaced largely by electronic wizardry. However, learning them can be great fun and it’s a great team building opportunity. Cut loose with your creativity to find different ways of representing ‘dots and dashes’ and substitutions for Semaphore Flags. Consider transmitting Bible texts etc.Another new requirement examines the role of trumpets as a signalling instrument in the Scriptures. It’s an example of what ‘treasures’ await those who study God’s Word.
Small Engines
Small engines . . . they seem to be everywhere. You’ll find them in lawnmowers, brush-cutters, small pumps, small generators and even model aeroplanes. The list seems endless.In this honour you’ll learn about 2-stroke and 4-stroke cycles. You’ll know about the components of a 2-stroke engine, ignition systems, lubrication systems and different fuels.On the practical side, there’s the safety aspects of operating small engines and handling and storing fuel. There’s troubleshooting tips and information on spark plugs and how they can give an indication of ‘engine health’. Finally, there’s the satisfaction of overhauling a small engine.
Word Processing 1
This honour is an introduction to word processing — a really useful skill these days.A definition of word processing is discussed first. Next, the focus is on gaining a basic understanding of how to use the hardware (computers and printers etc) and to put the word processing software into action.To demonstrate your skills, you’ll use word processing software to create a document.As an alternative to creating your own document, we’ve invented an imaginary Pathfinder who has started to write an account of a campout. It needs editing and completing.
